With more and more people working from home these days, I thought it would be appropriate to do a shop the look on this home office project I did for the e-design tribe contest. I had so much fun working on this project, and I think the renderings turned out fantastic. This shop the look will a go a little more in-depth than what I typically do for this type of blog post.
But first, I want to give a brief description of my faux client for this project. My client is a woman, a mom, and she works from home. This home office is just off of the family room so that she can still be part of her family’s routine when the kids are home from school, and she needs to work. However, she prefers not to work when her kids are home. She works in fashion, so she sometimes needs to collaborate with vendors and others with-in her company. She wanted her home office to be functional, but still pretty. She LOVES Modern Farmhouse, but also love some of the fun elements in the Modern Boho style. So, the design for her space is mostly Farmhouse, with a little bit of Boho. Prior to my coming on board to help her finalize her room design, she had her windows replaced and I helped her choose new flooring for this space. Chevron is one of her favorite patterns, so this flooring option was a no brainer.
Before we get into the shopping, I want to start with the furniture plan. I designed this room with specific intentions for my client:
- Since my client had a carpenter and was willing to do simple built-ins, I designed a wood floating ledge that went across her window, behind where her desk will be. This gave her plenty of space to work and since she only uses a laptop, she can make her desk space wherever she wants it to be for that day. This is also helpful if she ever has co-workers come over to work side by side, or if she hires an assistant. Since the ledge is 29” above the floor, it leaves space below to tuck in a file cabinet or other storage cabinets that she needs.
- I decided to float her desk rather than have it against the wall. This gives a much better look to the space and provides a nice flow. Most of the time she uses the sliding door, and not the back door since that goes out to her back yard and is not useable as an entrance for people who are coming over to meet with her. It also gave me a chance to put a cozy rug under her desk and designate that space. The chair across from her desk is for guests or a chair that my client can use when she’s looking through books as needed for her job.
- On the right side of the room, I put a sitting area for those days when she wants to be a little comfier while she works. It’s also an extra place to set a laptop down since the accent table can be easily moved, and there is a floor lamp allowing for ample light.
- Lastly, all the windows have fabric roman shades so that she can adjust the lighting that comes into the room as needed. I put some long hanging drapery at the window on the left to soften the space and keep in line with the overall style that she likes. I added some plants to give the room a boho vibe.
As you can see, with e-design, it’s more than just a new pretty space. E-designers also consider how you work, play, relax, and move around in your space.
Here is the first view, standing at the bench looking towards the back door. I love the shadows that are cast in this rendering, it really gives it a realistic feel.
Here is the second view. I like to give my e-design clients multiple views of their space so that they can really visualize what they’re going to get from every angle. This is looking from the back door towards the slider. The black wall behind the tall cabinet is shiplap. My client had her carpenter install wood slats on top of her existing drywall and paint it black, but you can also find peel and stick boards as well.
Now for the reason why you’re here, below is the shopping list for this space:
I love the simplicity and Farmhouse feel of this desk. It comes with one drawer which was all we need for this space since my client had other surfaces, drawers, and cabinets to store her items. This allowed for her desk to be more of a sculptural, clean element in the room.
It’s good to have a comfy, durable, nice looking desk chair for your home. This leather task chair met all the requirements. I love the gold finish at the swivel base. This brought in a little bit of that Boho feel.
Doesn’t this guest chair look so cozy? I wanted to bring a little bit of a darker color into the room since most of the room feels light and airy (typical Farmhouse). But this chair gives your eye something rest on. Plus, it looks like one of those chairs you want to sit on as soon as you walk into the room. This chair has more of a modern vibe, so we are mixing up the styles a little bit.
This Bench is just lovely, isn’t it? This fit nicely into the space and the wood finish of the leg’s pairs nicely with the desk.
This side table brings in a fun, vintage feel. I think it can be found in either a modern Farmhouse or Boho space. It provides another surface for drinks, a laptop, a place to put a notebook, or some flowers to brighten the office.
The rendering really didn’t do this lamp justice, it is just gorgeous. This is a versatile item it can be used in almost any décor style.
The BILLY bookcase from Ikea is another one of those versatile pieces. It can be used in almost any room in your home. When I want something that has that built-in feel but not price tag, I always check Ikea first.
LOVE this task lamp. I’m a sucker for anything blue. Again, with the gold, marble and pop of color this element helped to bring in a modern Boho feel.
My client’s space had two surface mounted pendant lights. The ceilings aren’t super high, so I opted to replace the pendants she had with these semi-flush versions. Very modern Farmhouse in feel, and they are just beautiful in an office space (I helped one of my previous clients choose a light fixture similar to this one).
Roman shade is so classic, they look good in any décor style. To modernize the feel of these romans, I opted for a grey color. They are lined so they allow for privacy while also keeping the bright sunshine out.
The area rug that I choose for this client is no longer available. I’ve found something similar here. I wanted something with a minty green/blue color mixed with other tones and this was exactly what I was looking for.
I always say, you can ever have too many plant stands and baskets. Adding a plant or two to a room literally adds life to that space. I decided to mix these two in this space.
These drapes are so fresh, I couldn’t resist. These drapes would look good in tons of different style rooms.
The deep orange color in this pillow plays with the accent colors from the area rug. It helps to ensure the room isn’t completely flat since it’s mostly grey’s and blue’s. The tribal pattern of this pillow defiantly lends itself to the Bohemian vibe.
Last, but not least, I fell in LOVE with this wall disc. It’s flat, so not a basket, but the pattern that is created with the way that the colors come together is so fun and modern. My client loved the geometric nature of this disc.
That’s all she wrote. I hope that you find some inspiration for your next modern décor project!
